Hello! I’m Linda

Registered Clinical Psychologist

My name is Linda Pera and I am a registered clinical psychologist in private practice. Whether you are seeking help or passing through, I believe you will be able to take something positive from this site.

My practice is located in Northcliff. My rooms are in a tranquil surrounding, which is conducive to emotional safety and healing.

If you are unable to travel to my rooms, I also carry out video counselling for your convenience.

Therapy can help us to better understand ourselves and create more of an awareness of the reasons that we do some things, so that we can improve those responses to create a better future for ourselves. Through talking in therapy about our pain, concerns, fears, anger, disappointments and even happiness, our innermost thoughts are released from the cage of our own heads, and through releasing them, they can be transformed, providing healing and changing the way that we live. Healing also comes from the non-judgemental, confidential and compassionate interaction in therapy. Our past is our past and we cannot go back and change it. However, our past gives us information as to why we find ourselves where we do and helps us to work in the present, with a view to a better future. Therapy can help us to live in a more effective way with the scars that we all carry from our pasts. It doesn’t take those away – it just gives us the skills to live with them, but in a better way. So, in a nutshell, therapy is about working for a better and brighter future.

In therapy, one size does not fit all. Every single person is different and my approach with everyone is unique, according to how they experience their lives, and what they want for their own future.

I work with most problems and with individuals, couples, adolescents and children. I charge medical aid rates and am willing to submit the account directly to your medical aid if you have funds and your medical aid covers therapy. This means you do not have to pay up front.

I look forward to our journey together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a person really change?

Do you wonder whether it is even possible for a person to change? Do you think that you would have to change yourself completely? Or do you wonder whether your partner can change? Remember that personality cannot change. Personality is formed over a few years starting from a very young age and is part of who you are. Personality traits can be things like introvert, extrovert, sensitive, nurturing, honest, fussy, perfectionistic, shy, etc. But behaviour can change. Behaviours are things like habits, ways we do things, ways we respond to certain situations and stimuli. Behaviours are of course influenced by various things, but they are different from personality traits and behaviour can definitely change.

How many couples counselling sessions do we need?

The number of sessions differs from person to person and from problem to problem. So whether it is couples counselling sessions, individual or family sessions, it is difficult to predict how many sessions anyone will need. But for couples counselling, it is important to remember that both parties need to want the counselling, both parties need to want the relationship and both parties need to put in the necessary effort. Couples counselling is like a strategy session – both parties need to implement the strategies and solutions in their lives, otherwise the relationship won’t be given the attention that it needs.

If I attend counselling, does it mean that I am weak or emotionally unstable?

The answer to this question is a definite NO! Attending counselling shows a strength and a willingness to look at yourself and identify the things that are difficult, need to change, are painful, or are holding you back. It takes courage and determination to do this and therefore, it definitely doesn’t mean anything negative at all.

What is the difference between talking to a psychologist and talking to a friend?

A psychologist is an expert in identifying obstacles to people’s mental wellbeing. Psychologists listen to what the person says, what the person does not say, how they say what they say, etc. and is able to understand what is behind a person’s difficulty. The psychologist will then provide you with this information to help you to find solutions to your problems and help you on the road to healing.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist has qualifications in psychology and studies human behaviour. A psychologist does not prescribe medication. There are different kinds of psychologists, such as a Clinical Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist, Educational Psychologist and Industrial Psychologist. Each category of psychologist works with different kinds of people and different kinds of problems. A psychiatrist first qualifies as a medical doctor and then specialises in psychiatry. Just like any other specialist doctor, a psychiatrist is a specialist doctor that treats mental illness with medication.
